Methodology & Data Sourcing
What primary sources we use, how the calculator math works, how dealer data is verified, and how often each dataset is refreshed.
1. Calculator math
Every calculator on this site reproduces a formula that exists in a primary source. We don't model future returns or discount rates beyond what the source prescribes.
Solar Depreciation Calculator
Formula source: Income Tax Act, 1961 — Section 32 (Accelerated Depreciation), Appendix I, Block VIII(8) ("Renewable energy devices").
Rate applied: 40% Written Down Value (WDV) for solar plant & machinery installed and put to use, with the additional 20% under Section 32(1)(iia) for plant & machinery used in manufacturing where applicable.
Tax shield computation: Annual depreciation × applicable corporate tax slab (22% / 25% / 30%) per the user's selection. We do not net for surcharge or cess; treat outputs as indicative.
Limitation we disclose: Calculator outputs are an indicative tax shield, not a CA-certified filing. Users are directed to consult their CA before filing.
EV Savings Calculator
Formula source: State EV policies (notified gazettes), FAME-III scheme guidelines (Ministry of Heavy Industries), state RTO road-tax schedules, current retail petrol/diesel/electricity tariffs as published by IOCL/HPCL/BPCL and respective DISCOMs.
Inputs we use as-is: Vehicle ex-showroom price, daily kilometres, ownership years, state.
Inputs we compute: Per-kilometre running cost (electricity tariff ÷ vehicle's WLTP efficiency); equivalent ICE running cost (petrol/diesel ÷ ARAI mileage); state-specific road-tax savings (per state RTO schedule for EVs vs ICE); FAME-III subsidy where applicable.
What we don't model: Battery degradation curves, resale value, insurance differentials, or financing cost. These are real but uncertain — we leave them out rather than guess.
Green Tax Calculator
Formula source: Central Motor Vehicles Rules + state-specific Motor Vehicles Tax Acts. Green tax (also called "environment compensation cess" in some states) applies to vehicles older than the threshold age set by each state.
Per-state rates we maintain: 36 states & UTs indexed. Rate, vehicle-age threshold, and exempt categories are stored against the state's gazette notification.
Refresh cadence: Reviewed quarterly; updated immediately when a state issues a new transport notification.
2. EV dealer directory
The dealer directory is built in two passes — discovery, then enrichment — and we're explicit about what's verified vs. inferred.
Pass 1 — Discovery (Google Places Text Search)
We query Google Places Text Search for combinations of {brand} dealer {city} across the cities and brands we cover. Each result is stored with its place_id as the unique key, so the same dealership cannot appear twice across queries.
Data captured: Name, address, city, state, brand, rating, review count, Google Maps URL, business status, place types.
Coverage today: 1,802 unique dealers across 30 cities and 14 states. Brands tracked: Tata, MG, Hyundai, Mahindra, BYD, Ola, Ather, TVS, Bajaj, Hero.
Pass 2 — Enrichment (Google Places Place Details)
Each discovered place_id is hit against the Place Details API to pull contact data. We store the full raw response per dealer for future re-verification.
Fields enriched: Phone (formatted + international), website, opening hours (full weekday breakdown), business status, place types.
Hit rate today: 94% with phone (1,696 / 1,802), 90% with website (1,614 / 1,802), 98% with opening hours.
What we publish: Phone, website, hours, rating, review count, Google Maps link. We do not publish individual reviewer text.
Verification and limits
"Verified" on this site means: present on Google Places with a non-CLOSED business status at the time of the last enrichment pass. It does not mean we have physically visited the dealership or independently confirmed inventory.
City pages with fewer than 3 verified dealers carry a noindex meta tag rather than being padded with non-dealer filler — we'd rather have fewer indexed pages than thin ones.
3. Refresh cadence
| Dataset | Refresh schedule | Trigger for ad-hoc update |
|---|---|---|
| State EV policies / FAME-III rates | Quarterly review | New gazette notification |
| Green tax rates (36 states & UTs) | Quarterly review | State transport-department circular |
| Solar subsidy rates (PM-Surya Ghar, state) | Quarterly review | MNRE press release / state DISCOM circular |
| EV dealer directory (Places enrichment) | Bi-annual full re-pull | User-reported closed/moved dealer |
| Petrol/diesel retail price (used in EV calc) | Quarterly review | >5% retail price change |
| Blog posts (policy explainers) | Reviewed annually | Underlying policy change |
4. Editorial standards
Bylines and review
Every blog post carries the byline of the team member who researched and wrote it. State / policy / scheme pages are reviewed by an editor and carry a "Reviewed by" line on the rendered page where applicable. Review dates are surfaced in the page metadata and in BlogPosting JSON-LD (dateModified + reviewedBy).
Sponsorship policy
We do not accept payment to feature dealers, brands, manufacturers, or installers in editorial guides. Comparison pages (e.g. Tata Nexon EV vs MG ZS EV) are written from publicly available spec sheets — no manufacturer pre-approves or pays for placement.
The site monetizes through display advertising and lead-capture for genuinely interested readers (e.g. solar installers) where the lead-receiving partner is clearly named on the form. Paid placements, when present, are labeled Sponsored.
Conflicts of interest
The operator of GreenTax.in also operates ScrapRates.in (vehicle scrap rate aggregator). Where the two sites cross-link — e.g. on the Vehicle Scrappage Policy page — the cross-link is editorial (it's the most relevant resource for a reader on that topic), not paid.
5. Corrections policy
If you find a wrong rate, an outdated subsidy figure, or a closed/moved dealer:
- Email admin@greentax.in with the page URL and a primary-source link if possible (gazette PDF, state RTO page, manufacturer spec sheet).
- We'll verify against the source within 5 working days.
- Substantive corrections are noted on the article with a dated "Correction:" footer, not silently overwritten.
We treat corrections as features, not embarrassments. Tax and subsidy data drifts; getting a correction is how the site gets better.
6. What this site is not
- We are not a chartered-accountancy practice. Calculator outputs are indicative; consult your CA before filing.
- We are not a manufacturer-affiliated EV portal. We don't sell vehicles, schedule test drives, or earn commission on dealer leads.
- We are not a price-discovery site. EV ex-showroom and solar installation prices in our calculators are public retail figures used as inputs — they are not real-time quotes.
- We do not aggregate user reviews of dealers. We surface Google's aggregate rating and review count, with attribution.
Have a source tip or correction?
We'd rather hear about an outdated rate from a reader than have it sit on the site for a year.
