What is Road Tax in India?

Road tax, officially known as Motor Vehicle Tax, is a one-time or periodic tax levied by state governments on vehicles at the time of registration. It is governed by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and varies significantly across Indian states.

Road tax is typically calculated as a percentage of the ex-showroom price of the vehicle and depends on factors like vehicle type, engine capacity, fuel type, and the state of registration.
